This course surveys the processes and institutions of United States national government including California state and local government. Among the topics discussed are individual political attitudes and values, political participation, voting, parties, interest groups, Congress, the presidency, Supreme Court, the federal bureaucracy, civil liberties and civil rights, and domestic and foreign policy making. Attention is paid both to the present state of the American political system and to its historical roots. In addition, Honors sections investigate in detail the original design of the American political system, including the values imbued in the Constitution, the construction of the federal system, and the legal responsibilities of the major actors, and contrast those features with the current conditions in American politics.
