The Health Information Technology (HIT) Program prepares students for a career working in health information management in a variety of healthcare settings. HIT professionals perform the essential functions of acquiring, analyzing, reporting, and protecting digital and traditional medical information. Through the use of technology and expertise in data integrity, confidentiality, and security, their work contributes to quality patient care. The curriculum provides emphasis in revenue management for a career in coding, auditing, and clinical documentation improvement, while also providing foundational knowledge in general health information management for job responsibilities that may include data collection, documentation analysis, release of information, or supervision. This program will also prepare students for entry-level positions in the profession and for transfer opportunities to accredited programs for licensure. Students must earn a grade of "C" or higher in all major courses.

Course Substitutions:

  1. Biology 20 or Biology 21A may be substituted for Biology 5, Biology 55, or Health 5.
  2. HIT 2 and MA 1 may be substituted for AHLTH 11.

  1. It is recommended for students to meet with a Health & STEM Pathway Counselor to develop a Student Education Plan (SEP).
  2. This major has several prerequisite courses that must be taken in a specific order and certain courses are only offered once a year.

1. Integrate knowledge and skills to perform entry level functions within the scope and practice of a health information management professional.

2. Demonstrate proficiency in utilization of health information technology systems and applications used to manage healthcare data.
