This program is designed to acquaint students with foreign languages and with an understanding of the culture and history of the people who speak them. The study of foreign languages encourages students to examine assumptions they have uncritically accepted before their college experience. Students with substantial foreign language fluency who combine their language skills with a solid foundation in liberal education will find fulfilling occupations. It will also encourage them to appreciate the complexities of the multicultural society in which they live. Students will acquire the necessary language skills to succeed in everyday life experiences, vocational programs, and university transfer courses.

1. Students will demonstrate listening and/or speaking, reading and/or writing skills at the intermediate-advanced level of the target language consistent with national standards for foreign language education.

Introduction to African-American Studies: a critical interdisciplinary study of African American culture, history, and heritage from Pre Colonial West Africa through the 21st Century. This course will include an introduction to West African societies of the 15th and 16th centuries, prior to European Colonial Expansion; an examination of the transition into the era of African enslavement in Colonial America; an exploration of African American cultural development during the era of Reconstruction; an evaluation of African American political movements in response to social injustice and African American creative production; an analysis of the assimilation of African American culture into mainstream American culture during the 20th century; and finally, to examine and evaluate the African American community of the 21st Century. This course provides an in-depth analysis of African Civilization from its earliest origins through the European Colonial period that includes geographical and topographical survey of the African continent, examination of the traditional African cultural traits represented in cultures and societies throughout the African continent, and evaluation and analysis of contact between African and Non-African societies during Arab and European Colonial eras. This course explores the history of the struggle for civil and human rights in the United States. We will study the historical forms of racism and white supremacy -- the many forms of discrimination, segregation and oppression -- and the variety of ways people resisted. We will focus on the modern African American civil rights movement from the end of World War II through the 1960s, but we will also dig into the historical roots of that struggle and the many other parallel movements. This course surveys the interdisciplinary field of LGBTQ+ Studies through the disciplines of history, literature, law, science, political science, media, the arts, psychology, and education. Theoretical perspectives concerning the historical development of sexual identity and the marginalization of sexual minority communities within social institutions in contemporary U.S. society and around the world will be explored.                                                                                                               The Native nations of North American (American Indians) from antiquity to the present. An interdisciplinary approach to examining pre- and post settler-colonial American Indian societies and cultures. This course analyzes the racialization of American Indians, eurocentrism, relationship to place, forced assimilation, intergenerational trauma, indigenous cosmology and ceremony, social justice, epistemology, and self-determination. Examination of the ancestral roots, dynamic migration/immigration trends, conflict, racialization processes, liberation struggles, socialization process, and sociopolitical patterns from ancient Indigenous civilizations of Mesoamerica to the present. Biology 21B is the second course in this two-semester sequence and builds on the anatomical and physiological foundations established in Biology 21A by examining the systems responsible for transport, regulation, metabolism, and reproduction in the human body. Emphasis is placed on the structure and function of the cardiovascular, lymphatic and immune, respiratory, digestive, urinary, endocrine, and reproductive systems, as well as the physiological mechanisms that regulate metabolism and maintain fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance. Typical structure and function are explored alongside common disorders and physiological adaptations to illustrate the clinical relevance of these systems and their integration in maintaining homeostasis throughout the lifespan.
