This program explores Mexican, Mexican American, and Chicano/a/x history, heritage and culture. Chicano Latino Studies (CLS) offers an interdisciplinary analysis of the study of community, resistance, and systems within a U.S. context. The curriculum provides students with a strong academic background helpful to those planning careers in CLS and Ethnic Studies in the K-12 and college systems, law, health, education, social work, business, and industry. Chicano Latino Studies provides the knowledge and skills necessary to help students understand, communicate, and appreciate the rich cultural diversity in U.S. society through the study of the Mexican, Mexican American, and Chicano/a/x people and the broader Latino/a/x community.
1. Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills across disciplines as they relate to the Chicano/a/x and Latino/a/x community.
2. Demonstrate growth in oral, written, and research skills.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of, and an ability to critically analyze and interpret, cultural expressions of the Chicano/a/x and Latino/a/x community.
4. Acquire extensive knowledge and an in-depth understanding of Chicano/a/x and Latino/a/x Studies, including history, culture, arts, and socio-political issues.
5. Demonstrate a commitment to community involvement, develop leadership skills and an understanding of social justice principles and their application in order to promote positive social change in the Chicano/a/x and Latino/a/x community and the broader society.
